Why a Raw Food Lifestyle Is Good for Your Mental and Physical Well Being
Switching to a raw food diet is undeniably a major lifestyle choice that you are making. Whatever your compulsions are for such a decision, you surely do not want to end up in a situation where you are hungry, unhappy or even discontent with the way your life has turned out to be after you switched to raw foods.
Whatever benefits in terms of physical health that raw diets can bring, it is important that you adopt a holistic raw food lifestyle so that you are mentally at peace and remain happy with your decision.
Raw Food lifestyle: Look at the Bigger Picture
Health is normally viewed in a fragmented manner. When we have a headache, we take an analgesic. Like when I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, my doctor immediately started me on with anti-hypertensive drugs. However, when you adopt a raw food lifestyle, you need to cultivate a mindset where you view health issues on a broader canvas. This means that you do not treat symptoms of diseases any more, you attempt to go deeper and tackle the root problem that is causing the symptoms to appear in the first place.
Essentially this means that while raw foods might assist you with your health maintenance, but you also have to adopt certain other changes also in your lifestyle, that complements your efforts to maintain good health.
Some Do’s and Don’ts for a Raw Food Lifestyle
When you take a brand new approach to the way you view health and try to fall into the folds of a raw food lifestyle, there are several do’s and don’ts that can be your guide. Here are some of them I discovered during my journey to inculcate the raw food habit:
- Fruits, nuts, vegetables and seeds form the basis of any raw food diet.
- Eliminate the following completely from your daily or even occasional consumption list: alcohol, smoking and coffee. These are also referred by many as ‘stimulants’.
- According to Raw Food Health foods like roasted nuts and fried oils are potentially carcinogenic. Raw food lifestyle also means saying no to meat, dairy products and eggs.
To understand the implications of a typical raw food lifestyle, remember that following a strict raw food diet plan is only the tip of the iceberg. There are several aspects to this kind of lifestyle, which are equally important to be pursued.
What Else Does a Raw Food Lifestyle Involve?
While switching your food habits could be the biggest obstacle in your adopting this type of lifestyle, there are other aspects which allow you to remain physically fit and mentally satisfied too. Following these tips, I also discovered a brand new perspective towards life. Here they are:
- If you have always craved a situation where you could consume more calories without running the risk of gaining weight, a raw food lifestyle is the way to go. Here if you back up your diet with regular physical exercise, you can fight depression, Alzheimer’s as well as a number of physical and emotional disorders.
- Don’t shun the sun. Most of us stay away from bright sunlight in the fear of sunburns, etc. However a judicious exposure to sun could supply adequate amounts of vitamin D. If ultra violet rays of the sun bother you, you also need to remember that without this, your body is incapable of processing vitamin C, important for intercellular functioning as well as for bone health.
- Raw food lifestyle also involves taking care of your emotional health as without it, the ultimate benefits of the diet plan may not be fully appreciated. You should spend as much time in the open (in non-urban environments) as possible for warding off depression and purifying your lungs. You should also place a lot of emphasis on the quantity and quality of sleep that you need every day to remain healthy and fit.
- As incredible as it may sound, staying away from TV, actually helped me to sleep better!
- Other factors that complement a raw food lifestyle include: remaining connected with family and friends; pursuing a creative hobby; adequate recreational pursuits; etc.
